In World War 1, the Germans kept sinking the American cargo ships that were neutral, so eventually the president had had enough and went to war.

EDIT -> The German's used Unrestricted Submarine Warfare, which sunk the Lusitania. The United States let it go the first time, asking them to stop using USW, not wanting to get involved in WWI. However, as the war started to turn against Germany, they started using it again. This is another reason the U.S. joined the war.

In World War 2, the U.S. joined the war because of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

The US decided to enter WW1 on the side of the Allies because of German submarine warfare, the release of cables attributed to the Germans encouraging Mexico to attack the US, and the success of anti-German Propaganda.

The US decided to enter the WW2 on the side of the Allies because Japan invaded the Philippines and other US holdings in the Pacific and bombed the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, so the Us was at war with Japan. Germany then declared war on the US, so the US also entered the war against Germany
