The problem lied in not having enough love for each other. Of course we must defend the truth, but not in separation of love.

Politics and religion make people do strange things. Religious hatred and irrational thinking caused people to fight one another. Each was convinced they were the "true" believers and that gave them the right to try and kill/oppress the other side.

Roman Catholic AnswerIf you really look at the protestant revolt, you find that there were not actually a lot of people that wanted to leave the Catholic Church. There were a few people, like Martin Luther, that had "issues" with the Church. They could have been resolved, but political leaders - princes and kings got involved, and decided that they would like nothing better than to be free from Rome, to not have to give allegiance to Rome, nor send money to Rome. So some German princes took up Martin Luther's battle cry to start a Church in Germany that did not owe allegiance to a "foreign prince". In England, it was the King, himself, who wanted to keep the Catholic Church, but divorced from the Pope. His advisers, and his son's advisers, and finally, his daughter, Elizabeth I, all were more protestant leaning then Henry himself, and they completed the purging of Catholicism from their new Church. In all these issues, you have the rulers who are fighting other rulers over religion, this tends to result in armed conflicts. On an individual level, all people are born with original sin, and without the grace of God, they tend to be taken over by the other guy, the evil one, and this tends to lead to conflicts, and fights.
