Because the Romans wanted a place to watch people get killed and wanted to see animals get killed as well. So in other words, they wanted a place for entertainment
It was built so people who did stuff wrong can be punished and there were games held there to put on a show for the audience.
A grand gesture by the rulers at the time, for entertainment. The same as today.

The Colosseum was built:

1) To provide a replacement for the first part-stone amphitheatre (arena) for gladiatorial games in Rome which had been inaugurated by Augustus in 29-30 BC and which burned down in 64 AD.

2) to reclaim the area in front of Nero's enormous palace (the Domus Aurea, Golden House) for public use.

3) to celebrate the Roman victory against the Jews in the revolt of the First Roman-Jewish War (66-73 AD).

4) To show the grandeur of Emperor Vespasian, whose rule was initially shaky.

The Colosseum was built as an ampitheatre for the gladiatorial games. The emperor Vespasian begun its construction in 72 AD. His son and successor Titus competed it and inaugurated it in 80 AD. Titus's younger brother and successor, Domitian, made further modification between 81 and 86 AD. These emperors belonged to the Flavian dynasty; hence it was called the Flavian amphitheatre. It was built for the following reasons:

1) To replace the amphitheatre which was inaugurated by Augustus in 30 BC (it was the city of Rome's second amphitheatre and the first one part built in stone) which burnt down in 64 AD.

2)To reclaim the area in front of Nero's massive palace (the Domus Aurea, Golden House) for public use. Domitian also built the public baths named after himself next to the Colosseum.

3)To celebrate the Romans' victory in the First Roman-Jewish War (66-73 BC) which was achieved by Vespasian and Titus. The spoils from that war provided the finance for such a vast project and slave labour to build it.

4) To show Vespasian's grandeur and bolster his position as emperor as he obtained his position through wars between rival claimants to the imperial title.

It was built by the Roman Emperor Vespasian as a monument to Rome's great victories for the purpose of gladiatorial contests, re-enactments of battles, animal hunts, performances of famous dramas, and other public spectacles.

The above is all true, but the fact is the Rome was seething with discontent and the Emperor needed a way for his people to be entertained and kept happy, to prevent riots and and enable easy governance. Public games were the answer, but they needed somewhere to hold them. Enter the Colosseum, an arena large enough to accommodate 50- to 80,000 people.

To please the public. Gladiator games that Romans found very interesting were fought in it and other theaters. It kept public order and made the people happy. it was built by emperor Vespasian in 69ad and payed for it by using treasure his son Titus took from the second temple of Jerusalem in Judea after a failed revolt there. The Colosseum (or Flavian amphitheatre the Romans called after the Flavian dynasty which Vespasian and Titus belonged to) was completed by Titus in 80 a year after Vespasian's died. Titus brother and successor and

Domitian added to the finished structure. Unknown to the Romans, two things they invented while building would become important building materiel that was concrete and the red brick.
