The Hessians were mercenaries, paid by the British to fight. They had no particular interest in Britain and did not volunteer to serve Britain but were rented out by their rulers. They were from a region in Germany and most were poor and had poor prospects back home. They were not respected by the British soldiers. Consequently, when they were bombarded with Propaganda from the Americans and offered land grants to desert, many saw their chance to improve their lot and become Americans.
