It started when Martin Luther, a catholic who was against INDULGENCES which were pities from god being sold by catholics, put a 95 theses on a German church door and the theses spread over Europe , thus creating a full swing of protestant reformation.
Once the printing press, using movable type, had been invented, the Reformation was almost inevitable, since knowledge and information would thereafter become more readily available to the ordinary people.
The initial trigger for the Reformation was in the form of Martin Luther's 95 theses. Luther was opposed to corruption in the Catholic Church and sought to reform the sale of Indulgences but was excommunicated and his life was placed at risk. Freed from the strictures of the Catholic Church, Luther began to rethink the theology that had evolved within the Catholic Church.
It occurred because some people didn't like the Catholics so they split. One became the Protestant and the other stayed Catholic.
