Many historians claim WW ll began well before 1939 and Hitler's invasion of Poland. Historians cite the major invasion of China in 1931 and Italy's attack on Ethiopia, along with the German takeover of Austria as WW 2's real beginnings.
As for Japanese interests in China, it soon became clear that Japan wanted the Natural Resources of China due to its own lack of many of its own resources. China had coal, timber, and iron ore Japan needed to build its East Asian empire. The war was not the fault of China at all.

They were able to quickly defeat the Qing Dynasty's outdated military forces and secure victories on both land and sea. Additionally, Japan's industrialization and modernization efforts allowed them to outclass the Chinese military in terms of technology and organization.
