Many historians claim WW ll began well before 1939 and Hitler's invasion of Poland. Historians cite the major invasion of China in 1931 and Italy's attack on Ethiopia, along with the German takeover of Austria as WW 2's real beginnings.
As for Japanese interests in China, it soon became clear that Japan wanted the Natural Resources of China due to its own lack of many of its own resources. China had coal, timber, and iron ore Japan needed to build its East Asian empire. The war was not the fault of China at all.

Japan forces invaded China, the Japanese needed the raw materials of Asia (and south-East Asia) for war production. Japan and China had been at odds for a long time.
