To put it simply the US Army took charge of the war in the Pacific with Australia and New Zealand. The European part of it was usually left to the Allies. ___ The above answer is incorrect. In fact, the Americans did fight in large numbers in Europe. As for Berlin, the Soviet Army got there first.

For purely political reasons. On December 6 most Americans had been firmly against US involvement in the current war. On December 8, they were furious with Japan, and ready to support a war against Japan, and Japan only. The men lining up outside enlistment offices that morning wanted to go kill Japs.

The Roosevelt administration knew that eventual US involvement in the war was almost unavoidable. However a US president must lead by persuasion, and cannot do what the people do not want, at least not for very long. Therefore Roosevelt desired that when the US got into the war, it should appear to be the other guy's fault, the result of foreign aggression. This the Germans and Italians obligingly supplied by declaring war on the US on December 11.
