The sun never set on the British Empire because of its navy. Maritime power meant that Britain could field colonies in the Americas, China, India, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. The navy could supply them and prevent other nations from attacking them [for any protracted period]. It was only internal dissension that lost it the American Colonies, when coupled with a costly war provoking an economic downturn. The Empire did not really start to break up until after WWI when so many colonies began to demand self-government, and the process was not really completed until after WWII.
