Cowpox was a less harmful version of smallpox. So their bodies created antibodies for the cowpox which in turn could kill the smallpox cells.

The two viruses have similar sites on their outer coats, so the same antibodies will bind to them.

Why the milkmaids did not get infected with smallpox?

Well, I think it is the case that cowpox is just a lesser, bovine version of smallpox. Milk maids would get cowpox simply because they were exposed to cattle constantly, much more than the average person, who was more likely to get smallpox than cowcox. A scientist called Edward Jenner observed that milk maids, who often got cowpox, never seemed to get smallpox. This was because milk maids would develop immunity to cowpox (and therefore smallpox) once they had fallen ill and recovered from cowpox. He then tested this theory on a young boy. He did this by injecting cowpox into the boy's blood stream; the boy then fell ill with cowpox. After the boy recovered from cowpox, the scientist then injected him with the life-threatening disease smallpox. The result proved his theory right; the injection of smallpox into the boy's bloodstream had had no effect on him, because his body had developed immunity to the disease. If you wish to learn more about vaccination and immunities, then research antibodies, antigens and vaccination and the way in which they all work.

It is known that if a person develops cow pox and recovers and then is exposed to smallpox and he or she is less likely to develop smallpox why?

This is because the two types of pox are related. Someone exposed to cowpox will develop antibodies to the cowpox. These antibodies will help fight against small pox. This phenomenon was observed by Edward Jenner, who used it to create a smallpox vaccine. (The word "vaccine" is related to the Latin word for "cow".)

What is homeotherapy?

Homeotherapy is using a similar disease to prevent a disease like cowpox was used to cure smallpox.

What if you used cowpox to prevent the flu?

It wouldn't work. You must introduce the specific viruses that cause influenza to prevent the flu. Cowpox vaccines would be used for preventing cowpox (or some infections by closely related other poxviruses).A similar virus to cowpox virus is Vaccinia virus which is the type of pox virus that was used to produce the vaccines originally developed and used to prevent smallpox. Smallpox is now eradicated from the wild thanks to worldwide use of smallpox vaccines made from Vaccinia.Despite its name, cowpox virus does not infect cows, it infects mice, rats and other rodents.

What did Edward Jenner do to stop illnesses getting worse?

Edward Jenner made a vaccicn that help people with smallpox Edward Jenner spoted that people who had cowpox could not get smallpox James phipps was the first person the be vaccinated by a weak form of cowpox

What does the smallpox vaccine have to do with cows?

The smallpox vaccine was developed by Edward Jenner, an English physician. He noticed that dairywomen who had caught cowpox - a related disease - did not catch smallpox. So he inoculated people with weakened cowpox, their bodies built up the antibodies to cowpox which then also protected them against smallpox.Cowpox is known as Variolae Vaccinae (vacca = cow in Latin) and hence the name.

How was the smallpox vaccine invented?

Dr Edward Jenner injected small boy who had smallpox with cowpox, after hearing from a dairy maid that people who got cowpox would not get smallpox. This worked and that's how vaccination came about.
