The Dutch East India Company established a shipping route from Europe to India around the southern tip of Africa. Jan van Riebeeck, arriving in three sailing ships landed in Table Bay on 6th April 1652, in what is now Cape Town, and established a colony for the purpose of re-victualing ships of the company using the route to and from India. He built vegetable gardens for this purpose. At the time the only inhabitants of the region were the aborigine San people also known as Bushmen or Strandlopers (beach walkers). van Riebeeck became the first Governor of the Cape Colony and the colony grew with a European culture and civilization becoming the modern city of Cape Town.
