Because they came from a country (England) where speaking out against the king/queen was grounds for public hanging or jail time. Also, they believed that free speech to the people meant that they could be involved in their government. They also saw freedom of speech as a right and saw it as not being able to be taken away.

- Voltaire was tired of everyone fighting.
