Many settlements expanded because of religious factions. People like Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams left to go to Rhode Island because they didn't agree with their religious leaders. Many also wanted more land to grow crops on, so they moved farther out where no colonists had land. The New World frontier was largely inhabited by Indians, who had major conflicts with the whites because the English moved onto their land.
