The Aztecs choose the location because it was believed to be the place where their god had told them to go. The sign they were looking for was a Eagle eating a snake on top of a cactus. The area was a good place originally because it had a very big variety of bird life. The land was also very little and it was not until they expanded it and adapted to the isle that things got better.

Their chroniclers told them that after their long journey from Aztlán, they found themselves to be outcasts, until they found the sign sent to them by their god Huitzilopochtli, and began to build their city.

The nomadic tribes that later on would form the Aztec/Mexica Empire shared the belief that their Gods would send a sign of where they should settle and build their civilization. It is said, and the codexes tell the story, that after many years of travel through arid lands) the deserts of Southwestern US and North Mexico, they came across an area lush and full of other cities. In the midst of this valley, there was a lagoon filled with nothing but pestilence and cacti, but it was there that the sign appeared: a Magestic eagle eating a snake on a Cactus (this became the symbol of the modern Mexican flag). The tribes settled right on the lagoon. They built chinampas (a sort of log platform covered with dirt) that became floating gardens. Little by little they increased the land to water ratio and built temples and one of the first planned cities in America.

The Aztecs lived in Mexico because they needed somewhere to build there buildings and to farm. They were from south west United States area and migrated to the region due to lack of water and fertile land where they used to live.

The Aztecs decide to settle in Mexico because their god told them to move south. When they did, they found a piece of land, but all the good parts of the lands were taken by the other tribes, and the Aztecs had try to live in an area that holds a lot of snakes. The Aztecs thought their god abandoned them, but then their god spoke to them again. The Aztecs did as they were told to, to keep going south until they see a hawk landing on a cactus growing out of a rock. Later, the Aztecs did see a hawk landing on a cactus growing out of a rock, and that's why they settled on Tenochtitlan, a land in the middle of lake Texcoco.

During the last Ice Age between 30,000 to 10,000 years ago, several human groups crossed the Bering Strait from Northern Asia due to lower sea levels, following animal migrations. That is how they populated the Americas, including Mexico.

Now, most groups that settled in Mexico found rich natural resources (animals to hunt, fruits to pick and fish to fish) which allowed several of them to form semi-nomadic lifestyles. With the advent of corn domestication, several civilizations spawned since 3000 BC, including the Olmecs, the Teotihuacans or the Mayans.

Before 1325 AD, the Aztec or Mexica people were a nomadic tribe that wandered throughout the land, looking for a place to settle and build their capital. Their state religion awaited the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy: that the wandering tribes would find the destined site for a great city whose location would be signaled by an eagle eating a snake while perched atop a cactus. The Aztecs saw this vision on what was then a small swampy island in the middle of lake Texcoco, after which they founded their capital Tenochtitlan (today known as Mexico City), on March 13, 1325.

The prophesy and subsequent vision is now immortalized in Mexico's coat of arms and on the Mexican flag.

I think they settle there because of the Natural Resources and somewhat good water supply
