The separatists who broke away from the Church of England fled to many different places to escape persecution and obtain religious freedom. These places included Ireland, continental Europe, and the New World. One of the most famous group of separatists, known as the Pilgrims, first sailed to the New World in the Mayflower and founded Plymouth Colony.
