They thought he would emancipate slaves. He said he wouldn't, but the southern governments thought otherwise.

Oddly enough by seceded from the Union, the southern states actually brought about the end of slavery. If they didn't secede, slavery would've probably gone on at least until the end of the 19th century.

This party did not approve of new slave-states, which the South wanted, to improve their voting power in Congress.

South Carolina felt so strongly about it that they started making plans for secession immediately after the election result.
