I don't know that I would use the word 'clustered', maybe 'centered' or 'concentrated' would be more accurate.
Since 1847, the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) has been located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Many Church members want to live close to the leadership of the Church and near other Church members. Also, Mormons settled much of Utah and their ancestors have remained in the same towns and kept the same religion. Today, only about 10% of Mormons live in Utah, and about 60% of Utahns are Mormon. Most Mormons live outside of the United States.
Early Mormons attempted to establish settlements in New York, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, and other states. Each time, they were severely persecuted - their homes were burned and men were often beaten or tarred and feathered. In Missouri, the state government ordered an extermination order against them. In Illinois, the government asked them to leave. The national government refused to step in, so the Mormons moved to what was then Mexico in search of a place to practice their religion in peace.
Shortly after arriving and establishing communities there, that area became part of the US due to the Mexican-American War.
