Australia has traditionally been a good ally with the United States. There was no reason why they shouldn't assist us. The Australian people remember our sacrifice during the WWII Battle of the Coral Sea (at Australia's doorstep). As well as the numerous land battles that took place in the surrounding islands north and north east of their country, in which the Australians fought by our side. Vietnam is a lot closer to Australia, than it is to the US, the Australians knew that if the Americans were going to travel that far to combat communism, then it must be important, and when a friend needs a helping hand, the Australians have always helped a friend in need. Australians should not have been involved in the Vietnam War because it was a war of aggression. We and the USA had no business bolstering an unpopular and corrupt government in order to interfere with the democratic process be it to our taste or not. It was a war that could not be won and as it turned out was lost many people were killed as a result of the war and the effects are still felt by the Vietnamese as a result of chemical bombing. But most all because nothing was gained for any one but those that produced the weapons and the politics surrounding the war. One should not aid a bully because the bully helped protect you once.

yes,

I had both my father in the australian army WO1 James Murray "67-68 serve in vietnam.

And my husband in the american army spec 4 Crosby Donald Coveyduck "68-70

who received both purpleheart and a bronze star for Valour whilst there!

I want to agree because I hate to think that their medical problems they have and in my husbands case still suffer from (as my father is now deceased)was for nothing!!!!!

To look at it from a political stand point there are pros and cons. For one, we fought in the Vietnam War out of a fear of communism and a loyalty to the USA, through the SEATO and ANZUS treaties. However, whether the USA should have gotten involved is questionable. Neither America nor Australia were absolutely justified in entering the Vietnam War, it was a civil war, not an international one. Aid could have been provided but the need to provide troops is questionable at best.

And before people get angry at me, my grandfather fought in the war and now suffers from multiple problems with his body. Not to mention that his best friend died. This does not change my view on the war, that it was not justified. In fact, he thinks it was for nothing as well.

Because the Australians already knew it was a false flag operation. Secretary of State, Robert McNamara, lied to a joint session of the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees about the role played by the Navy in starting the war with Vietnam. They claimed the Vietnamese attacked the US ships but their was no attack, it never happened.true. The Australians intelligence already knew, the US was fabricating the truth so they could enter the Vietnamese civil war, so like folks with high morales they sat this one out. The sad truth is several US senators were involved in this false flag operation that also knew there was no attack. The entire Vietnam war was a US scheme to feed the defense industry.
