Typically, it's not that they grade harder, it's that the expected standard of education that students must achieve is higher. This is why colleges and universities are referred to as institutions of higher learning. The higher the standard the more prepared students will be when they enter the workforce.

Coming from the teacher's point of you, and one reason I, being a college student, have heard many times, is that they were "preparing you for UNIVERSITY LEVEL WRITING" which is basically the same as college, just more defined and in depth.

My opinion, they just like to make you angry and add their own points of view as if they wished they were the one writing the essay! English teachers want you to write at a PH.D or MASTERS level like them. They think they are the best writers in the world because they have a paper that says so, so they mark 10x harder thinking that would motivate you to improve at a level that develops only with time and learning.

Don't worry to much about it! Just do your best, have what is required in your essay, and keep it simple and logical and you should be fine.

It is called "college" - not prep or high school. Professors mark appropriately based upon what a college student should know and be able to show.
