Incorrect weight oil. Incorrect size or cheap filter. Partially clogged oil galleys. Install the correct weight oil as listed in your owner's manual, and install a quality filter. If you have a GM vehicle install an AC/Delco filter. Other's use Purolator or Wix filter.
A tapping noise might come into the engine because of heat damage to the lifters of the motor. You might also hear a tapping sound if the engine has been damaged due to a blown head gasket.
General engine health can be determined by testing compression, oil pressure and blowby. The noise you describe can be caused by several things. Check the "temerature riser", a valve that allows exhaust gasses to cross over the intake manifold to pre-heat a cold engine. Also check the EGR valve. If it's leaking it can sometimes make a sound that might be interpreted as tapping. It could also be a collapsed lifter. That often occurs if the oil hasn't been kept clean. There are a few engine cleaning products that help occasionally, but don't count on it. You might also want to check your exhaust manifold and gasket. If the gasket is blown, or if the manifold is cracked, it can also make that loud tapping sound.
bad lifters will rattle when engine is running at idle you will hear anything from clicking in engine to rapid tapping, depending on how bad and how many lifters are bad if vehicle has hydraulic lifters check for proper oil level in cngine

Typically vehicles that use hydraulic lifters & have more miles on them, tend to have a tapping sound until the engine is "warmed up." The hydraulic valve train is designed to eliminate the gap at all operating temperatures, though overtime the lifters wear out and don't fill with oil as quickly resulting in the tapping sound you hear until the engine has warmed up, and the lifters have been properly filled and lubricated.
I hear it is located on the backside of the engine and its a SOB to get to. you actually have to rock the whole engine forward.
could be where your power steering fluid is cold and thick
If the egr valve was stuck open, the engine wouldn't idle. If the egr valve was stuck closed you may hear excessive pinging (spark knock) and in most vehicles, the check engine light would illuminate.
Or collapsed lifter Or collapsed lifter
engine has bad intake valve,
chances are good in your 1996 Chevy lumina if there is a slight tapping noise, check the oil. it may be low, or you may need to add a thicker additive. good luck!
When an engine is cold, the oil is thicker, and flows slower. When oil doesn't get to valvetrain components quickly, you'll hear knocking, also known as valvetrain clatter. As the engine warms up the knocking should go away.
