My caravan did the same thing. It also was a bit hesitant in starting after sitting for a period of time. One of the fuel injectors' seals had worn out and was seeping gas. If you only have to replace one injector, it will run you about $250. Might be cheaper in the long run to do them all.
car smells of gas inside and out
if you have a gas leak.
If there is a gas smell inside a car the vehicle needs to be inspected for a gas leak. Stop driving the car and look for any holes in the gas tank. Leaking gas can be dangerous and can result in a fatal accident.
gas leak?
If there is a gas smell inside the passenger compartment of a car, there is probably an exhaust leak in the system. Have it checked immediately.
That happened to me I lit a match, chucked it in and hoped for the best.... :D(ended up calling fire brigade)B. The gas smell will eventually leave the inside of the car if you leave the windows down. I've added a related link to a webpage with a lot of recipes that will help you get rid of the gas smell and make the inside of your car smell better.
If its just the smell from the vapors then you should be able to roll down the widows and leave them open for a while and the smell will go away. If you actually spilled gas in the car then you need to clean it with a deep cleaner of some sort once its cleaned then leave the windows open for a little bit and it should be gone.

You must take you car to a good garage and have a qualified mechanic check this out.
Car battery vapor is hydrogen gas and is extremely explosive.
I have a 1990 Buick Century 3300. Just replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator. It was leaking gas. Replace the vacum lines to the Fuel Pressure Regulator but I still smell gas inside on the driver's side compartment. The smell goes away when opening the windows. Where would there be a fuel leak that would cause the raw gas smell inside the car but not outside of the car?
