The number of members of the House of Representatives for each state is dependent on the population of the state. The 435 representatives are apportioned according to a state's population with respect to the nation's population. Populations are determined at the beginning of each decade through a census count.

In the US, the US Constitution created the Federal government with a legislative branch, executive branch and a judicial branch. Within the legislative branch, there are two bodies that pass legislation, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Each state is given 2 senators. The House of Representatives has legislators based on the population of each state. Therefore, large population states such as California and New York have more House Representatives because of their respective state's population.
