Many proteins require iron ions to function properly. The best known of these is hemoglobin, which uses an iron complex to bind O2. There are also a number of enzymes that require iron - nearly all species require some level of iron.

Iron is an important cofactor in a variety of enzymes and other proteins. A good example is heme, which is composed of a porphyrin ring coordinating a ferric ion (Fe2+) and is a major functional component of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin without heme prosthetic groups are unable to bind to oxygen and perform its normal function. There are several functions of iron in the body, but perhaps most substantially it allows oxygen to bind to red blood cells (as part of a compound known as hemoglobin) so we can allow our cells to respirate.

Most well-nourished people have 4-5 grams of hemoglobin. Out of these hemoglobin levels mostly2.5 grams of iron with hemoglobin to carry oxygen to every organ in the body and most of the rest present in all cells, but most common in bone marrow, liver, and spleen.
