Because Nixon had been Eisenhower's Vice President.
Seven. Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Clinton, and now Obama.
Eisenhower and Nixon were both elected as Republicans. Until he ran for president, Eisenhower avoided any political affiliation. While he was still in the Army, several people suggested to Eisenhower that he should run for public office once his military career was over - in fact, in 1947 Harry Truman offered to run with him on the Democratic presidential ticket in 1948 but Eisenhower turned him down. Some major figures in the Democratic party actually tried to swing their party's nomination in 1948 to Eisenhower but he emphatically refused to be part of it. Truman tried again in 1951 to get Ike to run for president as a Democrat. At that point Eisenhower finally voiced his disagreements with the Democratic party and declared himself and his family to be Republicans - and of course the Republicans promptly got busy talking him into running as their candidate. Nixon was affiliated with the Republican party from his election in 1946 as the US Representative from the 12th Congressional District until his resignation as President of the USA.
Nixon could have been tried and convicted.
Nothing much happened. Democrats wanted Nixon to indicted and tried, but Ford pardoned Nixon.
Nixon lost once, in 1960.

AnswerPast presidents who attempted to pass health care reform include, but not limited to, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Clinton and now Obama. Yes, two GOP presidents, Eisenhower and Nixon attempted to do it.AnswerMedicare passed during Lyndon Johnson's administration; that was a huge accomplishment. The Social Security amendment was signed into law July 30, 1965.The attempt to pass a national health care plan dates back to Teddy Roosevelt's 1912 US Presidential campaign. Some European countries had already implemented national health coverage and the equivalent of Social Security pensions by then.
"Tricky Dick" to US civilians & "B52 Nixon" to some GIs in Vietnam. Of all the US presidents involved with the Viet War (Eisenhower, Kennedy, LBJ, Nixon, and Ford); it was Nixon who really did try to "...bomb them (N. Vietnam) back into the stone age" (a line coined by USAF GEN Curtis LeMay when discussing North Vietnam). Nixon had a temper, and spoke directly to the point (he was NOT politically correct), and he used the B52 when ever he wanted to drive home a point (to North Vietnam). The most intense "maximum effort" B52 bombings were carried out under Nixon's command (accompanied with corresponding B52 losses).
Integration
Kennedy tried to become President only once, when he narrowly defeated Richard Nixon in 1960. He was nominated to be the Democratic Vice Presidential candidate in 1956 but came in second. His brother, Robert F. Kennedy, was running for President in 1968, but he was assassinated in June of that year.
Ted Kennedy said, My brother should not be worshiped or glorified, he should be remembered as a good man, who saw war and tried tostop it, Saw suffering and tried to heal it.
