- Both the U.S./Canadian governments make a great deal of revenue off tobacco and although they are behind the cause of it all (allegedly working with the tobacco companies at one time) the governments have turned on the tobacco companies. Although there are no ads on TV or in magazines or any form of media smoking is climbing once again because of stress or peer pressure of any age. Smokers and non smokers can get along if they respect each other. Example: Not smoking in a non smokers home; car or, if a friend has Asthma; Allergies then don't smoke around them and go outside. It all boils down to respect, but it is the governments (especially in Canada) that can stir up problems regarding smokers and making them outcasts so they can hike up the taxes on cigarettes. Often groups or gangs of students will smoke (against the establishment as almost all generations past to present) and if you do not join in then it can make that particular person feel pressured as well as not drinking large amounts of alcohol or doing street drugs with groups of friends or gangs. The pressure is on. It is up to each individual to not smoke if they have not started; over-do alcohol or drugs to impress and remain popular with a group of their peers. It takes fortitude to stand up for yourself and resist falling into the pitfalls. If your peers do not like it then find new friends. Good friends respect your decisions regarding smoking or anything else that may come up.

i honestly think that its peer pressure, like if one of your friends tells you to smoke and you say no and that friend keeps telling you to do it, you will want more and you will get used to it.

Belive it or not some of them still do. The worse thing about it is that some of them think that they have the right to smoke around outher people, who don't want their smoke. People who have to smoke should at least take it outside.
