Volunteers' Motivations: Findings from a National Survey
Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Dec 1996; 25: 485 - 505. Volunteers give their time for many reasons, ranging from self interest to altruism.
Note that that different motivational patterns are associated with different types of volunteering activities and with different demographic groups. The implications of this are that it is difficult to answer the question on ‘what are the motivations to volunteer’ that cuts across these situations and demographic characteristics. For example, students and retired people volunteer for very different reasons. Two good references for motivation on volunteering try the following articles.

Volunteers' Motivations: Findings from a National Survey
Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Dec 1996; 25: 485 - 505. Two theories to consider are:
1. Expectancy motivation theory suggests that three factors affect volunteering behavior: (a) the need for achievement, which is defined as the capacity for taking pride in accomplishment; (b) the need for affiliation, defined as the concern for one’s relationships with others; and (c) the need for power, or wanting to have an influence or impact on others. 2. Maslow’s theorysuggests that volunteering is not just a way to serve society as an end in itself (i.e., altruistic motivation) but is a means for nurturing self-actualized human beings. This theory reinforces the egoistic aspect of volunteer work in that people are motivated by unmet needs
yes. A volunteer is giving up their time to help kids
The best way to do this is to go down to your local animal shelter and volunteer your time. They will have you sign a few documents but that about it.
Volunteer work is just that, volunteered not paid. Volunteering is basically donating your time.
To volunteer for work in a company, one can use the local newspaper to find postings or ads of volunteer wanted or needed. For an individual to volunteer their time with a company is equivalent to learning skills, companies usually teach individuals skills that eventually learns and keep the knowledge.
To volunteer means to offer ones time or labour without monetary reward. Sometimes known as doing it for the sheer love of it. A volunteer is someone who volunteers their services for free.
if you belong to a church , you can always volunteer there, its a safe environment, and fun at the same time .

Usually not, they volunteer their time. It is there hobby.
Volunteer service would be to provide work or skills without pay. To exchange your gift/time/talent for the sake of giving it.
Time, money or services rendered are the usual areas of voluntarism.
Employers can NEVER compel unpaid time. All work time is paid.
There is no cost for a volunteer because a volunteer does it for nothing. They volunteer for what ever it is.
