It is in their nature to move around from place to place, helps spread their species. I suppose it is a evolutionary trait. Also, it could be a sign that the tank's water is out of balance, and that they are trying to find a better home. Apple snails leave the water to lay eggs as well, usually they'll put them just above the water line.
