If your problem is the same as that which I had with my 1998 Accord... 1) It would randomly turn off while driving, but would then turn back on by itself. 2) It would occasionally die as soon as starting, but then would start fine on second attempt. ... then it is a problem with the electrical switch. It only happened a handful of times over several months with my car, but then while driving one day, it started smoking from behind my steering wheel when the electrical portion of the switch went completely out. I could not start the car after that; it would start and immediately die every time I attempted to start it. If you are even slightly mechanically inclined, this is a fairly easy fix (it took me just one hour from start to finish and cost less than $50 at Costless Auto Parts). Here is a very detailed step-by-step guide with pictures showing how to fix this: http://www.Honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2353017.
Ignition switch
You were driving down the road and the engine just instantly quit? That's almost always the timing belt...which means, on a Honda, you're going to have to pull the head and look at the valves. A bent one will be REAL obvious.
Check the 1989 Honda Accords timing. If the engine has jumped time then the engine will buck and sputter.
