Prior to the religious reforms of King Josiah, the Hebrew people really did worship more than one god. Although much of the relevant material has been removed from The Bible or restated in pejorative terms, there is enough there for scholars to read the progress of religious belief.

Even in terms of the supreme Hebrew God, there are more than one name used. For example, the source now known as the 'Yahwist' and who recorded what we know of the early beliefs of the southern Hebrew kingdom of Judah, called God by the name Yahweh(YHWH). The source now known as the 'Elohist' and who recorded what we know of the early beliefs of the northern Hebrew kingdom of Israel, called God by the name Elohim. Another source referred to God as El Shaddai, and so on.
