The US President (and their families) live AT The White House because it is the hub of the United States Government. Not all of our Presidents have lived there, though. It is painted white because the original whitewash was applied to protect the exterior from deterioration and winter freezes.

It was built to house the president and the first president living in it was John Adams. It has changed over the centuries. Rooms added and changed and there is a Bowling alley, theater, flower shop, the bottom rooms are open as a museum for the public. The president is living on the second floor. At the sub level is a safe room and the war room.
