Eleven of the stars were for the eleven states in the Confederate States of America. Since there was a hope, at the time the flag was designed, that Missouri and Kentucky would join the CSA, the stars for these states were included.

Well, even though there were 11 confederate states there were two state (Missouri and Kentucky) did not successfully cede for the union.///This question has incorrect information, and the first part of the answer is not correct. The Battle Flag has 13 stars; 3 on each of the 4 wings of the cross and 1 in the center,a total of 13. The reason for this number is because many Southerners saw the separation of their states from the Union as equivalent to the 13 colonies separating from Britain in the American Revolution. In fact some in the South actually termed it "The Second American Revolution". The First National flag has 11 stars representing the 11 states in the Confederacy. It had nothing to do with any of the "border states".

When did someone change the confederate flag to the US flag like the 'stars and bars'?

When the Confederate States was formed, a committee was formed and a design was chosen which featured seven stars in a blue union with three bars--two of red between a white one. This was known as the Stars and Bars. In the heat and dust of battle, the Stars and Bars looked too much like the Union's Stars and Stripes and the Confederate Congress adopted a new flag with a union featuring the square battle flag of the Army of northern Virginia and a white field. This white field looked too much like a flag of surrender so a new flag was designed which added a red bar to the white field.

What is the confederate battle cross?

This is the battle flag of the Confederate armies. It a blue diagonal cross (St. Andrews cross) with 13 white stars set in the bars. The cross is set on a red field. It was first introduced to eliminate confusion between US flags and Confederate flags. It is also often incorrectly referred to as "The Stars and Bars", which was the name of the Confederate National Flag.

How many states did the Confederacy control during Civil War?

Answer The 11 states which were full-fledged members of the Confederacy were Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. The famous "Stars and Bars" flag of the CSA had 13 stars, because both Missouri and Kentucky had "governments in exile" in Richmond. Some Confederate flags even feature 15 stars, for all Southern states, including Maryland and Delaware. The Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) and the Arizona Territory were also held by Confederate forces at various points in the war.

What flag has the nickname of stars and bars?

The "Stars and Bars" is the common name for the first national flag of the Confederate States of America (CSA) dating from March 1861. The seven (7) stars in a circle represented the seven (7) states that seceded from the United States of America (USA). Eventually there were eleven (11) states that seceded and two (2) border states that actually had representatives in both the USA and CSA legislatures. Counting those border states gave the stars and bars a final ring of thirteen (13) stars.

What did the rebel flag stand for?

The flag referred to as the "Rebel Flag" in the United States is typically the rectangular Confederate flag known officially as the Confederate Navy Jack. The square flags with the same red background and diagonal blue cross with 13 white stars are the Cavalry and Artillery flags of the Confederacy (the Confederate States of America). These flags were NOT official flags of the Confederate States of America but rather battle-related flags. There is a common misconception that these battle flags are called the "stars and bars" because they actually have stars and bars. But the actual "stars and bars" flag is the first of three National Flag of the Confederacy... doesn't look a thing like the battle flags.

What is the nick name for the confederate flag?

This is actually the the confederate battle flag. The "crossed stars" is still incorporated in flags of a few southern states (Georgia and Mississippi maybe more). The official flag of the Confederate states of America changed many times in its short life. The Stars and Bars is the a common nickname, but this is the name of the actual confederate flag that did not have the crossed star pattern at all. The "crossed stars" design is sometimes called the "rebel," "southern cross" or "Dixie" flag. The final official flag of the confederate states, "The Bloodstained Banner," did have the "crossed star" design in the upper right corner.
