Why does the factory stereo seem to be on but buttons and volume don't work in my 1998 Civic LX?

Update: I disconnected the battery, touched the connectors together, and reconnected it: now it's just displaying the time, whereas before it was displaying all but the volume bars (between the '-' and '+'). Argh! Please help. Also, the red "alarm" LED isn't blinking... never has. Maybe my buttons are broken? Maybe the guys at the dealer Armor-All'd inside the face?
