If you take the driveshaft out of the transmission you will see a seal on the end of the transmission housing. It just pops out and you just drive the NEW seal back in with a SMALL hammer real easy. It is called a rear transmission seal.
If it still leaks fluid after installing new seal, then the brass bushing inside of the tail shaft housing is worn. Replace bushing.
Replace seal FIRST and if you still have a leak, then ask your question again. Thank you.
It would require the complete disassembly of the transmission because the tail shaft is the last part to come out of the transmission housing.
If you were to disassemble the entire transmission, the last part to come out would be the tail shaft.
no it will not fit at all
The rear, or tail shaft, of a transmission has a seal around the output shaft. The drive shaft will have to be removed and the seal replaced.
If you are talking about the SPLND STEEL center shaft that the driveshaft slides over, Then you will have to take the transmission APART to remove the shaft.

i have a long tail shaft turbo 350 in mine, you have to modify the mount is all, it will fit
Driver side tail shaft of the transmission.Driver side tail shaft of the transmission.
the 2wd turbo 350 has a longer tail shaft NEW ANSWER: The center shaft in a 4x4 transmission is longer then a 2 wheel drive trans. The reason is that it has a transfur case on the end of it, and the center shaft must fit into the transfur case to make it work.
No it will NOT interchange. The 350 and 400 turbo are actually VERY different transmissions.
There were turbo 350's with both a short and long tail shaft that fit a chevy. Long shaft were common from 71-76.
Yes, you need to open up the transmission and replace the or swap the output shaft. Then bolt on the shorter tail housing.
