Blowing cool air while idling & the water pump is not moving very fast is a key indicator of low engine coolant levels. Add some anti-freeze/water and likely you'll have warm air all the time.
because when car is sitting still and at idle you do not have "air flow" coming into radiator to help cool it as you do when you are driving. So fan compensates for this higher engine - antifreeze temperature to try and cool it off it has to work harder.

Usually you would let it warm up to 160 degrees f, and if run hard let the turbos cool down for at least 1 minute. My truck has a Cummins ISX in it. I warm the engine up by dumping the air out of the tanks before starting the engine, and letting it build pressure by idling. When the air is up to 110psi or so, it's ready. In shutdown, if you come off the interstate and pull into a truck stop, by the time you get to where you want to stop the truck, the turbo is spooled down. If I had something like a Cat 3406 or a Cummins Big Cam--an old tech engine--in my truck I'd idle for five minutes, but the ISX is designed to be shut down quickly.
Getting stuck in the snow and having your engine overheat is a very bad idea. You should turn the car off, let the engine cool, and call for a tow truck.
The purpose for the fan is to cool the radiator, therefore, the blades would, by definition, turn TOWARD the direction that the part of the blade that is closest to the engine... Therefore, it would push the air toward the radiator, particularly, when the truck is not in operation. As the previous poster indicated, it is generally clockwise.
Idling cars started before the Ford Model T in 1909. In those days cars were very dificult to start so once you hasd them running you didn't shut them off untill you were done with them. Now we Idle to warm or cool our cars. Blame the guy who invented the car heater.
when your running Dow the highway the engine get massive cooling from the high wind flow of road, but when its idling its just siting there with no real air flow to help cool it like on the road

If the thermostat is stuck open, the radiator is able to cool the antifreeze faster than the engine can heat it.
The vehicle does not have any airflow across either the engine or the radiator to cool things down like occurs when driving, if at an idle. This, coupled with a diminished flow of coolant through the engine at idle speed creates undissipated heat.
