Could be a bad overdrive solenoid switch or relay. No, I don't know where they are on this car.

There is a button on the left side of the gear shift shaft, just underneath the shift handle (automatic transmission). Push the button to toggle the overdrive on and off.
There is a push button on the end of your automatic shift lever. Pushing it in causes the Overdrive to turn on and off.
If the overdrive switch is turned off then the car will not go into overdrive. As it is not in overdrive, then it will not downshift out of overdrive as it normally would. It also will not shift to 3rd gear above a certain factory preset speed. Turn th overdrive on and see if it operates normally.
Overdrive is the normally allowed position . It won't shift into overdrive until the speed is faster anyway . On my 1995 Ford Explorer it doesn't shift into overdrive until I'm travelling about 50 miles per hour ( if you are towing or driving in hilly country where the transmission is constantly downshifting then you don't use overdrive )
When the check gauge light comes on in the 1995 Chevy Cheyenne, it means there is a problem with the transmission. If the truck won't shift in to overdrive, there is most likely a problem with the VSS system. The transmission needs to be removed so the VSS can be accessed.
There is no OD relay. All transmission shift functions are controled by the vehicle's PCM, using shift solenoids in the transmssion itself.
If you don't want the transmission to shift into overdrive ( such as when towing a trailer , or driving in hilly country where the transmission is constantly shifting between drive and overdrive ) push the button on the end of the gearsfift selector ( P R N etcetera ) and the O/D OFF light will appear in your dash . My 1995 Ford Explorer 4.0 liter will shift into overdrive at 50 MPH ( I don't know if that has anything to do with having 3.73 gears with my trailer towing package )
It sounds like a transmission problem rather than an engine problem.
If your transmission is picking up a fault it will go into protection mode, No OverDrive, This may just be a solonoid or perhaps something more serios like a pressure problem. Long term running in this condition will most likely cause damage, A transmission service is a small price to pay when compared with a recon or new trans.
