White men have been in charge for hundreds of years.

Answer

I'm not sure that the Pope has always been white, for the first six hundred years, until the rise of Islam, the Church was very strong in Northern Africa, one of our greatest saints, and bishops was from there - St. Augustine. Since Islam's invasion and take-over of Northern Africa, the Church has been mostly strong in Europe, and the vast majority of Cardinals, from whom the Pope is usually elected, have been Italian.
