His official sainthood as liberator of the slaves is more dubious. He proclaimed the freedom of Southern slaves, purely as a wartime tactic to keep the British from aiding the Confederates. He was not an Abolitionist; indeed he was selected as the Republican candidate because he was moderate on the slavery question.
