It is because in 1922 a treaty came into force that gave most of Ireland independence, creating what we now know as the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The majority of the people in the part of Ireland known as Northern Ireland wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom while the rest of Ireland wanted independence, and that is what happened.

Without going into long winded details, here are some bullet-points explaining what happened:

  • Basically the North and South were once together as just Ireland which took up 32 counties.
  • The English invaded and took over all of Ireland.
  • In the early 1920's A man named Michael Collins travelled to the UK and signed a treaty that freed 26 of the 32 counties from British rule (The now Republic of ireland)
  • The UK would not give back the remaining 6 counties as they were too valuable to the crown
  • the north was riddled with decades of disturbing violence between the unionist protestants (People who swore loyalty to the Queen and wanted to remain part of the UK) and The Nationalist Catholics (Those who wanted freedom from the UK and be reunited with the rest of Ireland.
  • The violence is at a ceasefire and is now referred to as "The Troubles"

The Northern Ireland is a separate state of the UK. The Republic of Ireland has its own government and is a country separate from the United Kingdom.

Ireland still hopes that they may (peacefully) get the 6 counties back one day

Ireland is an independent sovereign country just like France, Brazil or the USA. Also, Great Britain refers to a specific island, which contains England, Scotland and Wales. Ireland is a separate island.

After a war of independence a treaty was signed in 1921 where what is now called the Republic of Ireland became independent and Northern Ireland was created, as the majority there wanted to be part of the United Kingdom. The treaty came into force in 1922, and that is still the situation.

It is independent due to a treaty signed between Ireland and Britain, that came into effect in 1922. It is important to note that "Southern Ireland" is an incorrect term for what is sometimes called "The Republic of Ireland", "Éire" or just "Ireland". "Éire" and "Ireland" are the official names for the country. The island of Ireland also includes Northern Ireland. The most northerly point in all of Ireland is not in Northern Ireland, as it only form the northeast of the island.
