Atheophobia is the irrational fear and hatred of atheists that manifests itself as an aggressive prejudice against non-believers.
Tolerance for atheophobia is widespread because there are more believers in the world than non-believers. Religious beliefs are so closely held they make it difficult if not impossible for most religionists to accept those who do not believe in a supernatural diety. Perhaps it makes them angry that a minority does not share their fear of the unknown. Most religious groups have actively preached against Atheism and religious intolerance has created a constellation of inaccurate descriptions about atheists that include:
- moral inferiority
- embracing evil and decadence
- living meaningless lives
- unsuitable for positions of responsibility and authority
- a desire to destroy religion
