I assume you have a 96 and up vehicle. If the light is blinking and then eventually it will stay on, it's always been a misfire code for me. Take your car to an autozone or advance auto parts and they will read the code for you. It will usually be plugs, wires, or a coil, depending on your car. Hope this helps.

The check engine light will blink when you're engine is misfiring. The smell from the cat is raw(unburned gas) hitting it....which can cause some pretty bad smells and also ruin your cat. Sounds like you need some plugs and wires.

When it is blinking, it means that damage is being done to the converter. You smell fuel because it is running so rich. There is possibly a sensor the has gone bad and is telling the computer to add more fuel. There is so much going into the motor than it can burn it and some of the overflow is getting into the converter unburned. I am sure it is also getting into your oil. This can not only thin the oil but damage the lower end of the engine as the fuel acts a solvent, stopping the oil from being a lubricant. Get it checked out at an independent garage and get the oil changed at the same time-asap.
