your heater core is leaking. this is located most the time under the dash. you will have to have it replaced
Those "fumes" are more than likely coolant steam coming from a leaky heater core. Replacing the heater core is your best option.

replace the heater core, it most likely has a busted tube making the water heat and turn into steam whenever the heater or defroster is on. you may want to check the coolant level. after so long of the steam, or super heated water, escaping into the air duct system. you will obviously lose coolant level.

Sounds like your heater core has a leak and is causing steam to enter your air ducts. Does the steam have a coolant oder, if so, you will have to pull it and replace.
