If you can hear the fuel pump while the Jeep is running, then the fuel pump is going bad or the fuel filter is partially clogged. Replace the fuel filter now. It could last for a while in that condition or die tomorrow. Mine ran that way for about a week before going out completely. Don't make my mistake -- go ahead and replace it immediately!
The main fuel pump can be noisy if it does not get enough fuel, mostly if the in-tank fuel pump is not working. For example if your gas tank is pretty full, you most likely do not hear any noise since the weight/pressure of a full gas tank is providing more pressure for the main fuel pump which is mounted underneath the car in a subframe. So if your main fuel pump is getting noisy with an almost empty gas tank it's most likely the in-tank fuel pump that is not working. Also check the corresponding relay (usually white) underneath the passenger glove compartment. Bottom line, If your fuel is pump noisy, but you are still driving, your main pump most likely is still good while the in-tank pump is not working.
Jeep does not use inertia/ reset switches.
First you must pinch off the fuel line on the top side of the fuel pump so there wont be any fuel loss, then remove the fuel tank straps and remove the tank from your jeep. there will be a big screw on lide then remove the fuel pump from the tank.
The fuel pump is going bad, or the filter is so clogged that the pump is using too many amps to run.
The fuel pump is inside of the gas tank on a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee so the tank must be removed in order to replace the fuel pump. I'm pretty sure its the same for the Cherokee "classic". I just had mine replaced a few months ago. Good Luck!
you have to physically drop the the fuel tank. Remove the electric pump apparatus that will give you access to the inside of the tank. inspect it and clean it. Note:a noisy pump is a sure indicator that the pump is going Bad so make choice during this procedure
most likely it is the fuel pump to check cycle the ke to the on position and then to off with out cranking do this 3 times then crank if it starts the fuel pump is bleeding back fuel pressure and this will prim the fuel system there are two repais new fuel pump or o ring kit offerd by the dealer if it is a high milage jeep and you cant live with cycling the key go ahead and replace the fuel pump so you don't wast the time and money of the o ring repair
I have the exact same problem. After replacing the fuel pump everything was fine. Now the fuel pump does not always kick on and you have to turn the ignition on and off until you hear the fuel pump kick in. Went to start this morning and fuel pump did not kick in, still wont. So I checked the relays, all good. Now the fuel pump kicks on but it still wont start. Did the computer on this thing die?
Fuel pump? Pound on the fuel tank pretty firm with your fist 5 times or so and see if it starts
It doesn't have an electric fuel pump. It has a carburetor and a mechanical fuel pump. So there isn't a fuel pump fuse.
My jeep would caugh and miss after half throttle but run perfect up until then, it was a weak fuel pump with a split in the hose on top of fuel pun so it wasn't Geri g enough gas , test with a fuel pressure gauge
Is new fuel pump working? If so turn key to "On" position without starting car for about 5 sec. to prime pump and lines - Do this twice and then try to start Is new fuel pump working?
