I Guess this has something to with English(U S) and English (UK) in how we spell things same as with gray and grey ,hope this helps,,,i may be back with a better explanation soon America thought English was too complicated, and so simplified most of the spellings.

Answer Around the beginning of the 19th century Noah Webster (as in Webster's Dictionary) brought out a list of words which he though should be respelled, including colour, theatre etc. many of his "improvements" weren't accepted but many were. Until recently (internet) most of these US spellings weren't accepted anywhere except US.
