From the point of view of an imperialist, colonies are regions that the mother country can exploit for their Natural Resources, military significance or sources of cheap labor. It also allows for a place for citizens of the mother country to move into should the mother country become over-populated.

This allows the mother country to relieve social pressures within its own country, without making any attempts to fix the problems that caused those social pressures. It produces an artificial affluence at home among the classes involved in exploiting the colonies natural resources, creates an escape valve for poverty by encouraging poor citizens to migrate to the colony for greater opportunities and may provide a strategic military asset.
