The Vice President is responsible for situations in which the President fails to be present in decision making, or in cases in which he/she isn't present. Like back during "Reconstruction," President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated midterm in office. Andrew Johnson took his place and represented for him. YOU'VE BEEN SERVED!

It is important to have a Vice President, because if anything happens to the President, there is automatically someone to step in for him/her instead of needing an election all over again.

In case the President dies in office (which has happened eight times) or is forced to resign (which has happened once) there is always someone who can be immediately sworn into the presidential office so that there is never a vacancy in that critical office.
because if the president dies the vice will take over.
