Perhaps you are trying too hard to be a Jew instead of just being someone who happens to be Jewish. If that's the first thing you throw at people, it is going to put a lot of people off. If you let them get to know you a bit and then explain that you are Jewish, I would think it would go over easier. It's not like being Jewish is so terrible. Depending on how strict you happen to be, there may be some minor conflicts on some day and eating out, but it really shouldn't be that big of a problem. Contrary to what you might think, it's been my experience that getting friends period is hard. Associates, people you socialize with in a very casual way are easy. Friends are a lot harder to come by. True friends that you keep for life that you can trust and you know will always have your back are few and far between. First step is being willing to be that kind of person for someone else. You get burned a lot in the process, but that's the chance you have to take.
And second it doesn't have to be hard if you know what you're doing and being a Jew has nothing to do with it.
