Why is it that when trying to start your Bonneville the security light comes on not allowing the car to start and then you have to wait 3 minutes to try again?

Put the key in and turn it to the "On" position, but don't start it.
The security light should stay lit for about 10 seconds then go out.
If that happens then the VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System) system (little resistor chip in your key) is functioning properly.
If it doesn't work just like that, then VATS should be disabling the car and it won't even crank.
