No, it is a six-cylinder gasoline engine. If it were diesel, it would be labeled "300SDL" and make a lot more racket when the engine is running. The 300SEL is a W126 body style and is longer than the 300SE.

In Europe and other parts of the world, it is an option on most models. In the states, all of them have driver side airbags standard and passenger side was an option. Very few 300SE/SELs, some 420SELs and just about all 560SELs have both driver and passenger side airbags starting in 1989
It means Supplemental Restraint System....or airbag in common terms. If the light remains on, my guess is that the system no longer works. It would cost about $2K to replace. Those cars are so safe, the seatbelt/shoulder harness should hold you in just fine.
