The constitution is the way it is for many reasons. Its foundations and principals came from the first modern political scientists like Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. Thomas Hobbes established the need for government, to prevent people from the State of Nature and Chaos. Hobbes believed that a monarchy was the answer to end perpetual revolution among classes. "Power is given by the people for the people" Hobbes - we give up our power so we may have peace. John Locke was the next modern political scientist that created the Labor theory of value which Thomas Jefferson based our second paragraph in the Declaration of Independence from. Locks originally read, People have natural rights "Rights to Life, Liberty, and Property. Today you may recognize it as the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. - Jefferson's little twist but it is still inferred that to be happy in America you must own property. - You own your labor. The second major contribution from lock was his key concept of Limited government Most importantly the feudal system in Europe existed before the founders left to start America. The King of England kicked out the Pilgrims then the colonies began and the King of England laid forth every tax imaginable on the colonies until a rebellion. Thus begin the establishment of separate church and state and the confederation. The articles of the confederation failed because it had no president, no national organized military to protect the territories, and mainly no power of taxation. In short, the constitution came out of the need for an encompassing power, to tax and protect America, based on the philosophies of Hobbes and Locke adapted by mainly Jefferson and Madison. The constitution was designed to make government inefficient. "An efficient government is a dangerous government" - Alexander Hamilton "ambition must be made to counteract ambition". And Compromise was made between the colonies to protect the rights of the people. The third major thing that made the constitution the way it is the fact that all its founders we bankers - Charles Beard would argue. Madison, Jefferson, Edison, and the other greats in American history were all aristocrats, upper class bankers. - Why else would you have in Article 1 section 8 of the constitution the laws regarding congress (National Gov.) the ability to collect taxes, Duties, Imposts to Pay debts and in par. 2 to borrow money on the credit of the United States and to coin money, regulate value, and to establish counterfeit and copyright protection all in the first article of the constitution -Clearly the thoughts of bankers. - Erik Stuenckel Political Science major, University of Laverne erik.stuenckel@yahoo.com
