Might be because of the statue of several US Military female nurses that was added after the wall was built. That was the only time that a "women's issue" was brought up.
Like most things in life, the "wall" was supposed to be a NON-politically correct simple memorial. Then came the statue of three soldiers (representing three races); then came the female nurses (representing women); there was talk of a K-9 statue representing the nearly 5,000 US war dogs that served in Vietnam; of which 43 were killed in action. Fair is fair, the US military canines deserve a statue near the wall too! They truly were "man's best friend" in the Vietnam War.
