First of all, I'm assuming that the oil level was high enough for the oil pump to produce adequate oil pressure to turn off the oil light before you changed the oil. If the oil light was off, the oil filter was full of oil. For the filter to have no oil in it when you remove it, the oil had to have leaked backed into the engine. How likely this is depends on the orientation of the filter and the design of the oil supply system. If it is a possibility on this car, the filter should have an anti-drainback and/or anti-siphon valve in the filter. I suspect that the oil filter was defective. My recommendation is to switch to another brand oil filter. Without getting into names, filters seem to fall into 3 categories. Good 2-3 dollars, better 5-6 dollars, best 10-12 dollars. I always use better or best and have never had a problem which I suspected was oil filter related. FYI - I was a certfied master mechanice for about 4 years back in the 80's.
